Examples of Duties Performed by the DON:
- Develops and implement philosophy, policies, objectives and procedures for nursing service.
- Determines the numbers of professional and non-professional staff necessary to meet the nursing care needs of the residents relative to budget and case mix.
- Participates in resident selection. Communicates with Social Services and discharge planners. Pre-admission visits as indicated.
- Assists with developing and implementing resident care policies as well as other nursing home policies.
- Responsible for planning and budgeting for nursing service.
- Directs all aspects of nursing service personnel process from hiring to termination, including evaluations and discipline.
- Promotes relationships between nursing personnel and other facility departments as well as outside agencies related to resident care (i.e. clinics, hospitals, pharmacies etc.).
- Maintains safe methods for drug distribution and destruction of narcotics in collaboration with licensed staff.
- Monitors residents medical records to maintain accuracy, completeness, legal compliance, etc.
- Claim coordinator for workers compensation issues.
- Collaborates and consults with the medical director and/or appropriate physicians.
- Identifies and implements service staff development needs. Maintains necessary records.
- Actively participates on the safety committee.
- Develops agenda for and actively participates in the QAPI committee.
- Conducts nursing staff meetings as needed/indicated.
- Participates with social services and administration in investigating and resolving resident/family concerns/grievances.
- Attends department head meetings and conducts them in the absence of the administrator.
- Knowledge of and active participation in State and Federal survey process as well as investigations.
- Responsible for infection control issues.
- Responsible for knowing and meeting the State and Federal regulations for the nursing department.
- In the absence of the MDS/RAI Coordinator, completes MDS's, RAI process, care planning and case mix.
- Assists administrator with managerial oversight of Heritage Court.
- Manages nursing home in administrator’s absence.
- Other duties as assigned by the administrator.
Qualifications for the DON:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Has current RN licensure in Minnesota.
- Has at least two years experience in nursing appropriate to the resident population of the care setting.
- Demonstrates a broad knowledge of nursing including gerontological nursing and related aspects, such as rehabilitation and mental health.
- Demonstrates knowledge of ANA Standards of Nursing Practice, Standards of Gerontological Nursing Practice and Code for Nurses.
- Skilled in oral and written communications.
- Demonstrates managerial ability and ability to work effectively with others.
- Thorough knowledge of the state and federal regulations.
- Awareness of community resources and health care agencies.
- Has the ability to collaborate with other health care professionals.
- Participates in continuing education in nursing, gerontology, and administration.
- Knowledge of computers.
